剧情介绍16岁的弗兰克·威廉·阿巴戈内尔(迪卡普里奥饰)拥有幸福的家庭。父亲是商界精英，得过市长赋予的荣誉勋章，享有很好的声誉，母亲光艳照人，亲切慈爱。弗兰克过着让人羡慕的生活。没过多久，弗兰克父亲的商店因为偷税被政府查处，名声扫地，优越的物质生活一落千丈。弗兰克的父亲试图向银行贷款东山再起，但屡遭拒绝。母亲有了外遇，终于走到与父亲离婚的地步。弗兰克伤心之下决定离家出走。利用自己的诈骗天才，弗兰克冒充泛美航空公司的副机长周游美国50多个州和法国等20多个国家，伪造银行支票诈骗银行款项，甚至用假支票支付性交易。后又伪造证件摇身一变成为医生，在路易斯安纳州获得律师资格，当上检察官。几年间，弗兰克诈骗数额高达400多万美元。
FBI探员卡尔（汤姆·汉克斯饰）受命追捕弗兰克，数次被弗兰克骗过而未能抓捕。正象动画片《猫和老鼠》中的汤姆猫与杰利鼠一样，汤姆猫永远也别想把聪明的杰利鼠捉到。卡尔后来对弗兰克的家庭情况进行了调查，既痛恨弗兰克犯下的罪行和对自己的戏弄，却又不自觉地同情他的家庭遭遇，佩服他的聪明才智，二人展开了一场猫捉老鼠的游戏。渐渐地，兵与贼之间产生了形同父子的友情和默契，最终卡尔在法国一个偏僻小镇把弗兰克捕获。但已被整得焦头烂额的法国警方气急败坏，在监狱中折磨弗兰克。卡尔力争把弗兰克引渡回美。弗兰克被判服刑12年，此时弗兰克的父亲已意外身亡，母亲也早改嫁。入狱后，卡尔经常前来探视，弗兰克用自己的知识为卡尔破解银行诈骗术。5年后，由于卡尔的建议与奔走，弗兰克得以恢复人身自由，条件是作FBI的技术顾问破解疑难骗案。

幕后制作
父子关系是该片的内在主线，连跟捉拿他的联邦调查局探员汉拉蒂和他之间，其实也是一种变异的父子关系。他俩之间的猫捉老鼠是影片的主要情节，仿佛是《亡命天涯》的喜剧版。这可能是莱昂纳多成年后扮演的最能发挥他本色的角色。影片的主题对白是通过一个重复了三次的小故事体现出来的：两只老鼠掉进牛奶里，其中一只放弃了希望，便淹死了，另一只则不停地挣扎，直到把牛奶搅成了奶酪，得以逃生。可以说，弗兰克身上散发着传统的“美国精神”。
