幕后制作从《冰河世纪》毛发如丝、身体柔软的小动物到《机器人历险记》全身上下都硬邦邦的金属机器人，任何人都有理由认为这是蓝天工作室黔驴技穷的一种创作“回流”现象，其实不然。动画界的发展可以说是日新月异，而观众对动画作品的要求益加苛刻，无非是因为皮克斯公司养刁了大众的味口。蓝天工作室的主创克里斯·伟基知道在技术上肯定拼不过已经做得如此到位的《超人总动员》，所以只能在故事上“智取”。高度现代化直接导致了人类的忧患意识，对未来的畅想也患得患失，伟基正是抓住了这一点，大胆的提出了“机器人城市”这样一个抽象的概念，打下了一个“在这样的城市，什么都有可能发生”的伏笔。
剧情简介 这是一个充满了怪诞念头与奇思妙想的世界，行走在大街小巷的皆是一些关节僵硬的机器人，它们和人类一样在衣、食、住、行这样的凡尘俗事中奔波劳碌，追逐名誉、地位和金钱，乐此不疲，并不会因为它们的“肉体”是金属而有所改变……
机器人的等级取决于制造的材料，所以说到“铜底”罗德尼的出身就只能用“卑微”两个字来形容，但他却自认拥有发明家的金脑袋。小镇的生活虽然平静，但并不能满足罗德尼的求知欲，他决定去“机器人城”拜访著名的发明家“大焊”，这位已经是一家大型企业总裁的传奇人物是他毕生的偶像，罗德尼带着自己引以为傲的发明作品踏上了看似平步青云的阳光大路……
罗德尼那未经历过人情世故的单纯脑瓜并不知道物欲横流早就冲垮了“大焊”最初从事发明的热情与理想，而“机器人城”这样一座表面繁华、高度机械化的大都市实际却是波涛暗涌。初来乍到的乡下小伙罗德尼看着自己身边衣着光鲜却紧锁眉头、行色匆匆的路人，最初的新鲜感和兴奋后，是前所未有的迷茫。虽然找到了“大焊”的公司，却受到看门人的无情奚落——接连碰壁让罗德尼体会到了梦想与现实的差距。就在他几近绝望之时，一伙被称为“废铜烂铁”的机器人向他伸出了援手，偌大的城市中，只有这伙在社会最底层打拼的人肯帮助罗德尼，使他在这个完全陌生的城市有了一个可以落脚的地方。与此同时，爱情也敲响了这个纯朴小伙子的铜心，虽然他几次去“大焊”名下的公司蹲坑未果，却因此结识了那里的女经理“螺母”……阴谋家“锯齿”也没有闲着，他计划摧毁“机器人城”以牟取暴利——人员全部到位，一场好戏就此拉开序幕。
