剧情简介二次世界大战结束前夕，一颗炮弹击中了年轻的士兵乔·邦汉，就此开始了他那不幸的生活。乔伤势严重，医生们认为他的大脑已被严重破坏，无法恢复，就将他扔在一边，任其自生自灭。苏醒过来的乔发现自己既聋又瞎，失去了语言能力，手和脚也被截去，这种生不如死的生活使他渴求着上帝。但他依然能像正常人一样思维，在回忆中想到慈祥的父亲和过去的女友，并能感受到阳光的沐浴。一个新来的护士察觉到了乔的内心世界，圣诞节到了，她在乔的胸前写下了“圣诞节快乐”。乔为同这个世界进行交流而积极努力，他在护士的帮助下学习用头部在枕头上敲击电板码。电码专家破解了电码，医生们知道乔想在狂欢节上露面，将他的遭遇公布于众。在乔的要求被拒绝后，他请求立即死去。这时，时常予以他帮助的那名护士被解雇了，乔孤零零地躺在床上，用头部不断地敲出呼救信号：“S—O—S……”
